It is important to note on Category - 6 Cables: CAT 6 is a cable standard for Gigabyte Ethernet and other network protocols that is backward compatible with the Category 5/5e and Category 3 cable standards. Cat-6 features more stringent specifications for cross talk and system noise. The cable is terminated in either the T568A configuration or the T568B configuration. It doesn't make any difference which is used, as they are both straight through pin to pin. However mixed cable types should not be connected in serial, as the impedance per pair differs and would cause signal loss or severe degradation. When connecting two Ethernet units of the same type PC to PC, or hub to hub, for example a cross over cable should be used although some modern hardware routers or switches, etc. will detect and utilize either type of cable automatically.

Telecommunications Industry Association or TIA: is a trade association in America representing overt 600 telecommunications companies. TIA is working to complete a new specification that will define bolstered performance standards for unshielded twisted pair cable systems. Draft specification ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 specifies cable systems, called "Augmented Category 6" or more frequently as "Category 6a", that operates at frequencies up to 500 MHz and providing up to 10 G/bytes bandwidth. The new specification has limits on alien cross talk in cabling systems.

Augmented Category 6 specifies cable operating at minimum frequency of 500 MHz, for both shielded and unshielded. It can support future 10 G/bytes applications up to the maximum distance of 100 meters on a 4 connector wire channel.

Helpful considerations when planning your electrical basement layout:

Bathrooms: If your vanity light is not illuminating the bath/shower area effectively a special covered recessed light can be installed directly above the bathing area. You may desire to have a combination light-fan installed or just a fan unit. Removing moisture from the bathroom prolongs the life expectancy of your paint and drywall finishes as eventually all finishes will give way to continued extreme humidity. Choose a fan that moves air at a sufficient rate to protect your finishes indefinitely.

Bedrooms:  The National Electrical Code requires at least one electrical outlet in all bedrooms be controlled by a wall switch. This requirement was established so that a table lamp etc. could be plugged into it illuminating the bedroom upon entry. From there, you could have the switch turn on a light fixture located in the ceiling or a combination ceiling fan/light. Recessed lighting is also an option.

Bedrooms are also required to contain a ceiling mounted hard-wired fire/smoke detector.

If you’re considering connecting a bathroom to a bedroom, be sure to acquire a quiet bathroom ventilation fan of good quality, to avoid being awakened in the middle of the night by a bathroom ventilation fan producing high noise levels.  Most home improvement stores have their ventilation fans on display with test buttons to activate the motors comparing noise levels.

Recessed Lighting: can be attractive when combined with dimmers giving any room a warm feeling. Recessed lighting can also be used as wall wash lighting, washing a specific wall or wall area with light i.e. above basement wet bars, kitchenettes or objects like sculptures and paintings. Home theaters are also big contenders for recessed lights with dimmer switches.

The disadvantages of recessed lighting are the limited area they illuminate and the large amounts of electricity consumed when used to light entire rooms because you must place these fixture types close together to achieve desired results. Where it may take one or two normal ceiling fixtures to accomplish the desired illumination you’re looking for, it may take three to four times the number of recessed lights to achieve the same.

Unfortunately in some basements due to their restrictive ceilings heights recessed lighting may become your only real solution and or option to lighting the room or rooms and having them still qualify as new living space when you resell your home as there are minimum ceiling height requirements that need to be maintained for any room to be considered living space and actually cannot be advertised as such or considered living space when you resell your home if the minimum ceiling heights are not met. For hallways and corridors with low or restricted ceiling heights, consider using wall sconces for lighting to reduce energy consumption while maintaining minimum ceiling height requirements as these areas normally do not need to be illuminated all the time. One wall sconce can throw light out, up to the ceiling and down to the floor. Sconces add a custom touch while offering a huge efficient alternative to the necessity of several recessed lights.

If your intentions are to utilize recessed lighting as entire room lighting. Design your layout such that each light is approximately six to eight feet apart and evenly spaced reducing the distance when using smaller 3-inch or 4-inch recessed lights. When lighting walls or objects, be sure your desired room layout addresses alternative room configurations as you may chose to move your furniture and other items around or accommodate for new later on. You may want to plan for an additional light(s) or future pre-positioned ceiling and or wall wiring with cover plate access in your alternate location(s) to avoid the need to call an electrician back. It is much more efficient and a whole lot less expensive for you to put all of your lighting considerations in even your alternative ones prior to the ceiling and wall installations than it is for you to retrofit additional lights after the final construction has been completed.

Federal Pacific Stab-lok Electrical Panels and Circuit Breakers

Federal Pacific Electric Stab-lok type residential circuit breakers have been reported to have created fire hazards. FPE Stab-lok® circuit breakers and electrical panels can still be found in millions of homes. Although FPE has not made a circuit breaker since 1986, the circuit breaker processes were obtained and subsequently maintained by other companies. In the United States, Stab-lok® circuit breakers are sold by the American Circuit Breaker Corporation.

How to Identify FPE Electrical Panels

FPE panels are simple to recognize displaying the FPE or the "Stab-Lok" brand on the inside of the door of your electric panel.  Markings may not be totally noticeable in older home installations so look closely.

Federal Pacific Electrical Panels Information

Federal Pacific Electric, FPE Stab-lok electric panels over time have shown a history of breakers not tripping when they are suppose to. These problematic circuit breakers are supposed to shut off when the electrical current reaches a level that could start a fire or damage equipment.

Due to their design and or quality control troubles, the FPE Stab-Lok circuit breakers have not worked as reliably as intended. Testing has proven approximately 30% of the 2-pole circuit breakers have failed to trip when they are supposed to. Unfortunately some entire lots of these breakers have been 100% defective. Fuses were utilized to provide the same safety function that today’s circuit breakers now provide. The situation with the FPE circuit breakers is no different than the dangerous yet common practice of over fusing or even putting a penny in the fuse socket behind the fuse itself to deal with the trouble of fuses repeatedly blowing.  There isn't an electrical inspector, an electrical contractor or even a realtor who would not agree that these conditions should be corrected and quickly!

The distinction is that over using is easy to see, but there is typically no visual indication that a breaker is working properly or not, giving the homeowner the perception that the breakers are in fine working order.  There is no way an electrician can look at a panel and know if the breakers inside will trip when they should.

The Solution

Although some companies have started making replacement breakers for the FPE panels, in most cases these replacement breakers have been manufactured with the same problematic design as the original and there is no supporting data showing that they are more reliable. Further although not as well documented as the circuit breaker problem replacing the circuit breakers does not address the problems with the buss bars in FPE panels. The only sure solution to address all of these situations is to replace the entire panel.

Home owners are encouraged to update themselves on FPE panels, the remedial acts to take if any, making an informed decision on their best course of action.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter - AFCI Information

As documented by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, home wiring problems like arcing and sparking cause more than 40,000 residential fires, annually. The fires take over 350 lives and injure 1,400 victims a year. An electrical safety device for homes, known as an arc fault circuit interrupter or AFCI, is hoped to afford greater protection from fires resulting from unsafe home wiring conditions.

Conventional household fuses and circuit breakers do not respond to early arcing and sparking conditions in home wiring. By the time a fuse or circuit breaker opens a circuit to defuse these conditions; a fire may already have begun. Several years ago, a CPSC study identified arc fault detection as a promising new technology. Since then, CPSC electrical engineers have tested the new AFCI’s on the market and found these products to be effective.

Are AFCI’s required

AFCI’s have been tested and proven to be effective devices in preventing house fires.  As of January 2002 the National Electrical Code requires AFCI’s for bedroom circuits in basements, new residential construction and remodels.  Future editions of the NEC, which updates every three years, will most likely broaden coverage to include more than just bedroom circuits taking place after the adoption of the 2008 NEC.

Should You Install AFCI’s

You may desire to add AFCI protection for added peace of mind. Homes built before 2002 with conventional circuit breakers will profit from the added defense against arc faults occurring within aging wiring systems.

 Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters - AFCI Types

Branch/Feeder AFCI’s: are installed at the source of the branch circuit and or feeder like at the panel board for instance providing protection to the branch circuit wiring and feeder wiring against arc faults.  Branch Feeder AFCI’s also provide protection to branch circuit extension wiring. Branch Feeder AFCI’s typically are circuit breaker with AFCI integration or of independent enclosures mounted at or beside a panel board.

Combination AFCI’s: are devices manufactured to meet both the requirements for  branch/feeder and outlet circuit designed to protect downstream branch circuit wiring, cord sets and power supply cords.

Cord AFCI’s: are plug in devices manufactured to connect to a receptacle outlet, to provide protection to the power-supply cord connected to it against arc faults. The cord maybe part of the device and the device has no added outlets.

Outlet Circuit AFCI’s: are installed at branch circuit outlets and or receptacles to provide protection to power supply cords and the power cords connected to them providing protection against arc faults. Outlet Circuit AFCI’s also provide feed through protection of the cord sets and power supply cords connected to receptacles further down.

Portable AFCI’s: are plug in devices manufactured to connect to a receptacle outlet to provide the user with one or more outlets. It is designed to provide protection to connected cord sets and power supply cords against arc faults.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter - GFCI Information

Outdoor outlets, kitchens outlets and bathroom outlets and all other areas subject or adjacent to water should be of the ground fault circuit interrupting design GFCI.

Ground fault circuit interrupters or GFCI’s are devices designed to protect against electric shock when installed in electrical circuits. It is estimated that 200 of the 300 electrocutions that happen each year inside and around the home can be avoided with properly installed GFCI devices.

GFCI’s are designed to safeguard people and pets from harsh and sometimes deadly electrical shock by detecting ground faults and when one is present these devices then interrupt the surge of electrical current. A running hairdryer is accidentally knocked off the bathroom counter and into a bathtub filled with water. If the hairdryer is plugged into a properly installed GFCI the flow of electricity will be stopped instantly within milliseconds of the hair dryer hitting the water’s surface. Had someone been in the bathtub at the time of the mishap although a painful shock may have been encountered the GFCI would prevent the electrical shock from escalating into a serious injury or worse their electrocution.

How Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters Work

GFCI’s continuously monitor the electrical current flowing inside a circuit looking for any loss of current. When the electrical current passing through the circuit become inconsistent, fluctuating by even a minuscule in the quantity from that which is returning to complete the circuit, the GFCI instantly stops the power to the circuit. The GFCI disrupts the power within milliseconds avoiding deadly doses of electricity from being administered.

Testing a GFCI Outlet

GFCI’s should be tested at least once a month to be sure they are in proper operating and working order. GFCI outlets should also be tested immediately upon installation to assure proper operation and protection of the electrical circuit. Testing a GFCI protected outlet is outlined here:

  1. Plug a small lamp into a GFCI protected outlet
  2. Turn the lamp on confirming the light bulb is lit
  3. Push the “TEST” button on the GFCI, the "RESET" button should pop out and the light bulb should go out
  4. Push the "RESET" button to restore power to the outlet
  5. If steps 1-4 worked appropriately, the GFCI protected outlet is functioning properly and no further actions are necessary

If the "RESET" button does not pop out, the GFCI is faulty and should be replaced. If the "RESET" button pops out but the light does not go out, the GFCI has been wired inappropriately; you should contact a licensed electrician to correct the wiring mistakes. Types of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters - GFCI

Receptacle GFCI’s: are used in place of conventional wall outlets or duplex receptacles. GFCI’s are typically found throughout the house in places like bathrooms, garages, kitchens, outdoor areas and other locations where damp conditions exist or have the potential to exist. GFCI receptacles fit inside the standard outlet box protecting you against ground faults when electrical products are plugged into them. Modern homes use GFCI’s to protect other electrical outlets connected on the same branch circuit, like a bathroom outlet downstairs not working because something tripped the GFCI in the upstairs bathroom.

Temporary/Portable GFCI’s: When permanent GFCI’s are not practical, temporary GFCI’s are used. Temporary GFCI’s contain the GFCI circuitry in an enclosure with plug prongs in the back and receptacle plugs in the front. These can be plugged into an unprotected outlet providing GFCI protection to the electrical appliance and or device plugged into it. Portable GFCI’s quite simply are extension cords with GFCI circuitry integrated into them providing flexibility utilizing receptacles that are not protected with GFCI technology.  Extension cords with GFCI protection are great when permanent or portable GFCI protection is unavailable.

Circuit Breaker GFCI’s: Homes equipped with circuit breakers can have circuit breaker GFCI protection installed in the electrical panel providing protection to specific circuits. Circuit breaker GFCI’s serve two functions. The circuit breaker GFCI will shut the power off to the circuit the instance a ground fault is detected and also turn the power off if a short circuit or overload is presented.
