Questions to Ask Before You Hire PDF Print E-mail

The emphasis on hiring an insured and licensed electrical contractor can never be overstated! The lives and safety of your family, friends and neighbors depends on it and rests solely on the experience, expertise and technical training only a licensed electrical contractor can provide. When you hire a non licensed contractor or those who wire houses and buildings on the side, well simply put, you just place yourself and others in danger.

Ask these simple questions before entering into and or signing any contract agreement:

Are you a licensed Electrical contractor in the state of New Hampshire?

(if the work under contract will be performed in New Hampshire) as contractors need to be licensed in the state the work is performed in.

This will identify, expose and or weed out most of the electrical hobbyists and expose those performing illegal electrical services to the general public.  If the person or business you are considering to hire asks you the property owner to apply for the necessary permit for the electrical services requested, more than likely the entity or person are not licensed. If the electrical contractor or person says they are not licensed or are not willing to provide you with their license number you should immediately look for someone else.  It is important to note that all liability falls on the person or entity who applies and subsequently acquires the permit so don't bring the unnecessary liability upon yourself and always have your contractor of choice pull their own permits for their work under contract.  If you suspect the person or business is providing misleading information, you may check with the agency listed below:

Is your business in good standing with the Secretary of State?

Home owners may subject themselves to uninvited trouble if the entity or person under consideration for hire is not registered to perform or conduct business in the state the work is performed in (as contractors need to be licensed in the state the work is performed in) and when not in good standing, subjecting their property to noncollectable damages.  Always choose an electrical contractor in good standing with the Secretary of State in the state the work is performed in.

Do you carry General Liability and Worker's Compensation Insurance?

If any electrical entity or person performing work under contract on your property inadvertently causes damage to your property or persons on your property  while performing the work under contract and does not have a General Liability insurance Policy in place,  will definitely subject you into being liable for paying the costs incurred for the repairs and or medical assistance and or law suit.

If an electrician is injured on your property you will want a peace of mind knowing that you are covered and protected because the firm you hired has this injury covered under a Worker's Compensation insurance policy in place.

Be sure you are covered and ask for proof.
